What is a DBB ball valve?
DBB stands for Double Block and Bleed. It is an isolation valve widely used in oil & gas and refinery systems, available in both floating ball and trunnion mounted designs. Closed position, two independent SPE seats isolate pressure from upstream and downstream, and the middle bleed port lets operators vent trapped cavity pressure for safe maintenance.
There are two DBB constructions: single‑ball DBB and double‑ball DBB. Single‑ball DBB uses one ball fitted with two SPE seats, compact and cost‑effective for most general‑duty applications. Double‑ball DBB contains two separate balls inside one valve body, delivering higher sealing reliability for critical high‑pressure working conditions. Standard DBB with dual SPE seats features automatic cavity pressure relief and requires no external relief device.
The difference between DBB, DIB-1 and DIB-2
People often mix DBB up with DIB-1 and DIB-2 under API 6D.
DBB uses two SPE seats and isolates two separate pressure sources, but offers no redundant second seal if one seat leaks.
DIB-1 is fitted with two bidirectional DPE seats. It provides double redundant isolation for pressure from either side. Since DPE seats cannot self-relieve cavity over‑pressure, an external safety relief valve is mandatory.
DIB-2 is a hybrid design: one DPE seat plus one SPE seat. The SPE side automatically relieves cavity pressure back to pipeline without extra accessories. Yet DIB-2 is direction-dependent; installation orientation must be clearly marked on valve flange. It supplies redundant double-isolation only for pressure coming from the specified side.
