Gear Operated Ball Valves

A gear operated ball valve combines a quarter-turn ball valve with a gearbox actuator that multiplies the operator’s input torque, making it practical to open and close large-bore or high-pressure lines by hand where a plain lever would be too stiff to turn. The gearbox carries a clear open/closed position indicator and can be padlocked in either state for safety and tamper resistance. SEDELON gear operated ball valves are built to API 6D with forged bodies (A105 / F304 / F316 / F11 / F22 / duplex F51-F53), fire-safe and anti-static construction, for oil & gas, petrochemical, power and pipeline service.

product feature

  • Gearbox actuator – multiplies hand torque so large-bore and high-pressure valves can be operated manually without excessive effort.
  • Position indicator & padlockable – the handwheel shows open/closed at a glance and can be locked in position.
  • Floating or trunnion ball – ball type selected to match bore and pressure (larger sizes use a trunnion-mounted ball).
  • Blow-out proof stem – stem is retained from inside the body and cannot be ejected under line pressure.
  • Fire-safe & anti-static – graphite seat rings plus metal-to-metal backup seal (API 607) and an anti-static path through stem/ball/body.
  • Low operating torque – gear reduction gives smooth, low-effort operation even on big valves.
  • Zero-leakage sealing – soft seats tested to API 598 for bubble-tight shutoff.
  • Multi-end connection – flanged ends to ANSI B16.5 and butt-weld ends to ANSI B16.25 are offered as standard.

How a Gear Operated Ball Valve Works

The valve body is a standard quarter-turn ball valve; the difference is the actuator. A gearbox (worm-gear or bevel-gear reduction) sits between the handwheel and the stem, so several turns of the handwheel produce one 90° rotation of the ball. This reduction multiplies the operator’s torque, letting a single person open or close a large-bore or high-pressure valve that a direct lever could not move. The handwheel position always shows whether the ball bore is aligned with the pipeline (open) or at 90° (closed).

Application

Gear operated ball valves are used where lever torque is insufficient — large-bore lines, high-pressure systems, buried or hard-to-reach valves, and stations that need a lockable open/closed state. Typical service includes oil & gas pipelines, refineries, petrochemical plants, power stations, tank farms and general industrial utilities.

FAQ

Q: What is a gear operated ball valve?
A: A quarter-turn ball valve fitted with a gearbox actuator that multiplies hand torque, so large or high-pressure valves can still be operated manually.

Q: When do I need a gear operator instead of a lever?
A: Choose a gear operator when the line is large-bore (roughly NPS 10″ and above), high-pressure, buried/hard to reach, or requires a lockable position. For smaller, easily reached lines a lever operated ball valve is enough.

Q: Can the gear operator be locked or later automated?
A: Yes — the handwheel can be padlocked open or closed, and the gearbox can later be adapted to a pneumatic or electric actuator if automation is required.

Q: Floating vs trunnion ball for gear operated valves?
A: Smaller gear operated valves use a floating ball; larger bore / higher-pressure units use a trunnion mounted ball valve with a supported ball.

Q: What standards and end connections apply?
A: Design and manufacture to API 6D, face-to-face to ANSI B16.10, flanged ends to ANSI B16.5, butt-weld ends to ANSI B16.25, pressure-tested to API 598.

Q: Are you a manufacturer, and can you supply samples?
A: SEDELON is a ball valve manufacturer. We provide drawings, material certificates (EN 10204 3.1) and a fast sample quote — contact us for a 3-day sample quotation.

A lever operated ball valve uses a manually actuated lever handle to rotate a bored ball a quarter turn (90°) between fully open and fully closed. The quarter-turn action gives fast, positive shutoff, the lever position itself gives instant visual confirmation of whether the valve is open or closed, and the low operating torque makes it the most practical choice for frequent manual operation on small-to-medium bore lines. SEDELON lever ball valves are built to API 6D with a floating ball design and fire-safe, anti-static construction, covering NPS 2″–10″ / Class 150–300 for oil & gas, water, chemical and general industrial service.

Pressure Seal Gate Valve vs Bolted Bonnet: High-Pressure Steam Service Selection

A pressure seal gate valve uses line pressure to tighten a self-energizing gasket, so the joint seals tighter as steam pressure rises; a bolted bonnet clamps the joint with studs and needs ever-larger studs at high pressure. This guide compares the two designs on sealing, pressure class, temperature, maintenance and cost, and how to specify the right gate valve.

API 6D and API 608 ball valves look alike but serve different worlds. API 6D governs pipeline valves with butt-weld ends and full mill certification; API 608 covers refinery and process-plant ball valves, usually flanged in smaller bores. This guide compares end design, pressure class, fire safety, sour service and documentation, and how to choose the right standard.

Swing Check Valve vs Lift Check Valve: Backflow Prevention Selection Guide

A check valve stops backflow with no actuator. A swing check uses a hinged clapper for very low pressure drop on horizontal, large-bore lines; a lift check uses a guided disc that seats squarely for tighter, faster shut-off in vertical and high-velocity runs. This guide compares the two on sealing, pressure drop, orientation and water hammer risk.

Triple Offset Butterfly Valve vs Double Offset: Severe Service Selection Guide

Triple offset or double offset butterfly valve? The deciding question is whether the service needs fully metal-seated, zero-leakage, fire-safe isolation, or a resilient-seated throttling valve that is cheaper to run. This guide explains how the offsets work, where each design wins, and how to specify the right one for severe-service lines.
