Lever Operated Ball Valve

A lever operated ball valve uses a manually actuated lever handle to rotate a bored ball a quarter turn (90°) between fully open and fully closed. The quarter-turn action gives fast, positive shutoff, the lever position itself gives instant visual confirmation of whether the valve is open or closed, and the low operating torque makes it the most practical choice for frequent manual operation on small-to-medium bore lines. SEDELON lever ball valves are built to API 6D with a floating ball design and fire-safe, anti-static construction, covering NPS 2″–10″ / Class 150–300 for oil & gas, water, chemical and general industrial service.

product feature

  • Quarter-turn lever actuation – 90° open/close with the handle position showing open or shut at a glance; no gearbox or power supply required.
  • Floating ball design – line pressure pushes the ball against the downstream seat for tight, self-energizing shutoff across NPS 2″–10″.
  • Blow-out proof stem – the stem is retained from inside the body and cannot be ejected under pressure, improving field safety during packing adjustment.
  • Fire-safe construction – graphite seat rings and a metal-to-metal backup seal keep the valve functional under fire exposure (API 607).
  • Anti-static device – stem, ball and body are electrically continuous so static charges cannot build up and ignite flammable media.
  • Low torque, easy manual operation – optimized ball/seat geometry and a lever arm reduce hand effort, even after long idle periods.
  • Bubble-tight sealing – soft seats (PTFE / RPTFE) are tested to API 598 for zero-leakage shutoff in both directions.
  • Flexible end connections – flanged ends to ANSI B16.5 and butt-weld ends to ANSI B16.25 cover most pipeline and skid installations.

How a Lever Operated Ball Valve Works

The valve contains a spherical disc (the ball) with a central bore. Turning the lever 90° rotates the ball so the bore either lines up with the pipeline (open) or blocks it at right angles (closed). Because the motion is a single quarter turn, the valve goes from fully open to fully closed in one swift movement, and the lever orientation always indicates the flow state — parallel to the pipe means open, perpendicular means closed.

Application

Lever operated ball valves are widely used in oil & gas pipelines, water treatment and HVAC systems, chemical processing, power plants, refineries, tank farms and general industrial utilities where quick, reliable manual on/off control is needed on lines up to NPS 10″.

FAQ

What is a lever operated ball valve used for?
It provides fast quarter-turn manual open/close control for on/off service; the lever position gives an at-a-glance open/closed indication, ideal for lines that are operated by hand rather than automated.

Lever vs gear operated ball valve — which should I choose?
Choose a lever operated ball valve for smaller, easily reached lines where hand torque is enough. For larger diameters or higher pressures where hand torque is too high, use a gear operated ball valve that multiplies input force through a gearbox.

Floating vs trunnion ball — which do I need?
Lever operated valves in NPS 2″–10″ use a floating ball seated by line pressure. For very large bore or high-pressure service, a trunnion mounted ball valve with a supported ball is the better choice.

What end connections are available?
Flanged ends to ANSI B16.5 and butt-weld ends to ANSI B16.25; face-to-face dimensions follow ANSI B16.10.

What are the pressure and temperature limits?
Standard range is Class 150–300; the usable temperature depends on the body and seat material (e.g. PTFE seats suit roughly −29°C to +180°C, metal seats go higher).

How can I tell if the valve is open or closed?
The lever points parallel to the pipe when open and perpendicular (90°) when closed — no separate indicator is required.

Our industrial valves are designed for optimal performance and reliability across a wide range of applications.

SEDELON gear operated gate valves combine a wedge-gate isolation design with a geared handwheel actuator, cutting the operating torque needed on large-bore and high-pressure lines where a direct handwheel would be impractical. Built to API 600 with a bolted bonnet, they cover NPS 2″–24″ (DN50–DN600) and Class 150–2500, with flanged (ANSI B16.5) or butt-weld (ANSI B16.25) ends and a full material range from carbon and alloy steel to stainless, low-temperature and bronze. The result is a full-bore, low-pressure-drop shutoff built for oil & gas, refining, power, chemical and water service.

Pressure Seal Gate Valve vs Bolted Bonnet: High-Pressure Steam Service Selection

A pressure seal gate valve uses line pressure to tighten a self-energizing gasket, so the joint seals tighter as steam pressure rises; a bolted bonnet clamps the joint with studs and needs ever-larger studs at high pressure. This guide compares the two designs on sealing, pressure class, temperature, maintenance and cost, and how to specify the right gate valve.

API 6D Ball Valve vs API 608 Ball Valve: Pipeline vs Process Service Standards

API 6D and API 608 ball valves look alike but serve different worlds. API 6D governs pipeline valves with butt-weld ends and full mill certification; API 608 covers refinery and process-plant ball valves, usually flanged in smaller bores. This guide compares end design, pressure class, fire safety, sour service and documentation, and how to choose the right standard.

Swing Check Valve vs Lift Check Valve: Backflow Prevention Selection Guide

A check valve stops backflow with no actuator. A swing check uses a hinged clapper for very low pressure drop on horizontal, large-bore lines; a lift check uses a guided disc that seats squarely for tighter, faster shut-off in vertical and high-velocity runs. This guide compares the two on sealing, pressure drop, orientation and water hammer risk.
Triple Offset vs Double Offset Butterfly Valves

Triple Offset Butterfly Valve vs Double Offset: Severe Service Selection Guide

Triple offset or double offset butterfly valve? The deciding question is whether the service needs fully metal-seated, zero-leakage, fire-safe isolation, or a resilient-seated throttling valve that is cheaper to run. This guide explains how the offsets work, where each design wins, and how to specify the right one for severe-service lines.
